Immi Sarkar Sherif
Based in Benfleet, Essex UK, Immi Sarkar Sherif brings three decades of experience working in London secondary schools, teaching English, leading in challenging circumstances and helping to inspire a love of learning in generations of young people.
Immi writes fiction concerned with belonging, identity, and otherness. Her work is drawn to damage - to the people who live with it and survive it. She is interested in what happens when desire collides with control, and when private compulsions ripple outward into the world.
After many years spent teaching and shaping the voices of others, she is now turning fully to her own work. Her writing moves between literary realism and speculative fiction, often circling questions of alienation, power, and transformation. Dystopian thinking, moral ambiguity, and the language of science thread through her work.
She is currently writing her first novel, Leyla, about a young woman attempting to claim a place in the world while living with a compulsion for fire. The novel explores hunger, shame, intimacy, and the possibility of change.
On this site she publishes new short fiction, critical reflections, and reading recommendations across fiction and non-fiction, alongside ongoing notes on her work in progress.
Her work is shaped by discomfort, by refusal of easy resolution, and by a belief in storytelling as a way of entering difficult truths rather than escaping them.
